12 Month Check Up

22 lbs, 4 oz (40-50 percentile)
30 1/2 inches long (75 percentile)

Drew was incredibly cranky at the doctor's office yesterday. His morning nap was only about 75 minutes. I think he remembered his Daddy was home and wanted up to play. Either way, he was ready for his 2nd nap right about the time we got to the doctor's office. The bag was packed with new toys, but all he wanted was to go to sleep! I whipped out the camera for the sake of my tradition of taking a picture at each milestone doctor visit.

(This is what most of my pictures turned out looking like.)

2 shots and 30 seconds of crying later...and we're all good!

4 month check up

4 month stats: 16 lbs, 6 oz. and 25 inches long

His weight is in the 75th percentile and his length in the 50th. Perfect! We got an excellent report from the doctor that our little boy is growing and very healthy (and stout!). I couldn't help but laugh when they gave us a paper which stated, "By 6 months your child may be bearing some weight on his legs." Ha! This kid has put all his weight on his legs since 2 months and will now walk right across the room if you help him with balance!

The shots were painful, as expected, and mommy & Drew both cried. The good news is the crying lasted less than 20 seconds. We did the "Tylenol every 4 hours" bit, but last night (more than 24 hours after the shots) Drew was extremely fussy and refused to eat for several hours. I really wasn't concerned, but then he threw up all over the kitchen! My poor baby. :( His poor tummy was just rolling. He went to sleep for several hours, but I was concerned because he had not peed in 9 hours. I was super glad to see that wet diaper at 4am! He's better this morning, and I believe his appetite is coming back. The shots aren't fun, but I'm sure the diseases they protect him from would be a lot worse.

We talked to the pedi about cereal, and I was surprised that he told me if I wanted to that I could also start fruits and veggies between now and 6 months. He said this is what the schedule could look like by 6 months:

Breakfast- Cereal & breastmilk

Lunch- Veggie or fruit & breastmilk

Dinner- Veggie or fruit & breastmilk

Bedtime- Cereal & breastmilk

This would definitely be a change from every 2 hour feedings. We're hoping when we start adding the cereal (mixed with a fruit--thanks for the suggestion!) that he'll start sleeping better during the night. So...pretty soon we'll be starting rice, oatmeal, carrots, squash, peas, apples, and pears! My baby is growing too quickly. :( Sometimes I stare at him while he's sleeping and tears come to my eyes just thinking about how much I LOVE this person. It reminds me of the book, "Love You Forever." Such a good book. I'll be the woman driving to my 40 year old son's house to rock him at night. ;)

2 Month Well Visit and Shots!

So today was the big day. As we headed out the door this morning I got a wad of toilet paper and stuck it in my pocket b/c I knew I'd need it!

To tell you the truth, they weren't that bad, although I was only expecting two shots, not three! Drew cried about 10 seconds until Andrew picked him up. Then he just whimpered a little. I fed him before we left which put him right to sleep. He's been asleep for 2 hours now, which is almost a record time for him! We are stocked up on the Tylenol to give for the next day.

As for stats:

12 lbs. 9 oz (75th percentile)
23" long (50th percentile)

Dr. Phillips was incredibly nice, much more so than our last pediatrician at our 1 week visit. He sat down in the room and spent plenty of time with us. And I love that he asked if we had any questions, but didn't ask it with his back turned to us as he walked out the door. I hate when health care professionals do that! He said everything looked "perfect." The exact words I wanted to hear!

He did tell me something interesting about breastfeeding. A nurse in the hospital had told me this as well, but she wasn't sure if it was true. Dr. Phillips said statistics (don't they lie?) show that baby gets 90% of the milk from one breast in 5 minutes, 95% in 15 minutes. So in 10 minutes baby should get 90% of the milk in both breasts. I thought that was interesting considering my sweet child prefers to eat for 30 minutes sometimes!

Not much more time to write! I need to catch up on this HUGE mound of laundry! Instead, I'll leave you with pictures & a video if it will load quickly!

1 hour later...After loading this video FOREVER, I've decided to never upload another!

Learning His Ways

Hallelujah! A gift from God arrived last night in the form of sleep. This sounds awful coming from a nurse's mouth, but forget research! Drew sleeping right next to me is the best form of sleep for ALL of us. All I have to do is roll over to feed him, and Andrew takes care of the dirty diapers. He sleeps right on top of my chest where he's most comfortable. Since we have little rousing between feedings (no up and down to the rocking chair, lights turning off and on, etc) he goes right back to sleep after he eats...and Mommy does too! I'm not sure how much Daddy likes getting up and changing those diapers though. ;)

On the downside, my little man has an adult sized bladder. This hasn't been proven yet, but I've got evidence towards the matter. SO many times now I've noticed that Drew had a wet diaper and went to change it. It wasn't SOAKED, but it was definitely wet. I lay him in his bassinet for his nap and 10-15 minutes later he's fussing. I walk over. The entire bassinet is covered in pee. I would blame Huggies for their diapers not being absorbent enough, but for this much pee, my little guy should probably be in an adult sized Depends. I'm talking it's in his hair, his outfit, his blanket, and his feet. He's soaked. This happens daily. Even nightly, like last night--when he was LYING ON ME. Fun times! Since I'm pretty straight forward, I'll tell you I just threw the shirt in the floor, had Andrew change Drew, and continued sleeping. Sleep > cleanliness right now.

Drew had to go in for a pediatrician visit yesterday since he had urinating problems on our discharge date. They wanted to make sure he was peeing okay, not jaundiced, and was gaining weight. He's gained 9 ounces in 5 days! Yay, little dude! So he's 8 lbs. 8 oz. as of yesterday. We don't have to go back for a month, but I believe we'll be switching peds. I wasn't at all crazy about the one we went to. I have a real problem when any healthcare worker walks into a room and starts doing stuff to a patient without explaining to the patient or their parent what in the world they're doing or assessing. This is especially true when my baby is screaming bloody murder because it hurts! Oh and it didn't make a good impression on me when I looked down and saw that the chairs in the waiting room were TAPED together at the legs with scotch tape so they wouldn't move. I don't know why that bothered me so much, but it did. Oh and the well child and sick child waiting areas were separated with, you guessed it, a line of taped chairs. That'll show those germs!

Daddy & Drew at the pedi office

In his favorite sleeping place

A very proud Granna. We have to set time limits on how long she can hold Drew before the next person gets him. ;)

His sleeping position as I type this. His arms HAVE to be out of the covers. He hates being swaddled!

On a totally different note, in the 45 minutes that we were gone to the pedi's office yesterday, someone totally demolished our mailbox that had 10 balloons on it. Clearly, the driver wasn't paying attention. The worst part: he left no name or number. May he have diarrhea for a month!

Off to kiss someone's sweet face...

We're Home as a Family of Three

First of all, thank you all for your comments, calls, and prayers. We have such wonderful family and friends and are so blessed!

Drew is sleeping now in his bassinet for the first time. Prior to this afternoon, he's refused to sleep anywhere except our arms. I'm not complaining though. ;) He is by far our greatest blessing and we are SO happy to be home with a healthy baby boy. We had a really rough day on Saturday, our discharge date. Little Drew hadn't peed in 34 hours and was in the early stages of dehydration. No matter how much breast milk and formula he got, he still wouldn't pee! It was absolutely the hardest day of my life knowing something could be wrong with my baby. I finally decided to go along with the doctor and just cath him so we could see if he had urine or not. What an agonizing decision! As our nurse was about to rub him down with betadine to perform the cath, he peed!! She caught half an ounce in a cup as it shot across the room. He's been home free ever since. No mommy has ever been prouder of her son's tee-tee, I tell you!

Short and sweet:

He's eating really well now, and we have to wake him up to eat because he LOVES to sleep, and he's smiling constantly! We loooove his sweet smiles! Birth story to come later. Now to answer the question I'm constantly getting: "Where are more pictures??!!" They're right here...

Right before getting started: 38 weeks, 5 days

I'm so ready!

Surgery had started...

Here he comes!

Happy Birthday, baby boy! His cry left me crying!

Making the sweetest noise ever to Mommy's ears.
