Tips: Living on One Income

I've had several people ask lately about what our family does to be able to live on one income. We are no financial gurus, but I thought I'd share our tips in case someone else out there needs a little encouragement.

Let's make no beans about it: it takes sacrifice, but if staying home with your kids is your calling, it's worth it!

Here are my top tips for learning to live on one income:

1. Pray. I don't say this lightly. If you are tight on money, you'll find yourself on your knees anyway! Andrew and I spend a good bit of time in prayer together and separately praying for our finances. We want the Lord to guide our financial decisions, where our money goes, and what money comes into our pockets. We even pray before any big business meetings he has where money will be discussed.

2. Give. I'm no Bible scholar, but I only recall the Lord requesting us to test him one time in scripture. Malachi 3:10 says "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

Powerful, powerful words. Giving back to the Lord with your finances must be a priority--even when it seems like you don't have much to give. God explained that it's not about how much we give, but about the sacrifice we make in giving and the heart that goes along with it.

What we have is on loan to us from the Lord. I have learned through prayer and study that my home is not mine. That I should open it up to company when it's needed. That I should give of my food to others in my home when it's needed--even when it doesn't seem the funds are there to provide for more mouths.

Matthew 25:35-40 says:
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

3. Budget. Of course the basic step is to look at what money you have coming in and see where it's leaving. I know some people who do this diligently and know where every dime goes! We don't write ours out on paper weekly, but every few months we sit down with an Excel sheet and look to see where most of our money is going: mortgage, truck payment, school loans, groceries, gas, etc. This helps to see problem areas like "hey we ate out WAY too much that month!" or "how many Target trips did we make?! I know I didn't need that much stuff!"

4. Cut, cut, cut. This is where the rubber meets the road. Look at your budget and pick out the things not necessary for survival. When we started out with me staying home, we immediately cut out the satellite television. No more magazine renewals. No more vacations. Our eating out bill was DRASTICALLY cut down. (It was embarrassing how much money we gave to restaurants a month.) We no longer bought things we might used to throw into our shopping cart without a second thought--new eyeshadow, some random gadget for home repairs, a new shirt, etc. Those are things we mainly only buy now when we: 1) have a great coupon or 2) have birthday money or a gift card.

Right now we are looking at turning off our DSL. Instead, we can pay a one time $25 fee for PDANet and use our phone internet (which is not too terribly slow) and hook it to our computers. Another $40/month saved!

If you are spenders like we were, cutting out the fun extras is tough at first. It requires sacrifice, and it can be easy to get into the "woe is me!" situation, feeling sorry for yourself not being able to go and do "like everyone else." This is a whole other post, but at this point you have to remember your purpose on earth and that you are sacrificing for your calling and that every single sacrifice of another greasy hamburger or shopping spree is worth it!

5. Transportation. I'm going to say this in all honesty: having two vehicles is a luxury! It surely makes things easier with 2 modes of transportation, but we are looking at cutting down to one vehicle for a while. It's easy for us since Andrew works from home. Our plan is to take our tax return money, combine it with the money we get from (hopefully, prayerfully) selling our paid-off Honda, and paying off our truck note. That will save us car insurance on our paid for car, and put a lot of extra money in our pockets every month from the truck payment. After we're on our feet and get some money saved, we'll look into getting a used. family-friendly vehicle. Until then, Drew and I will have to find fun things to do at home! See if you can cut down to one vehicle. I know for some people, this will be impossible, but if you can swing it: go for it!

6. Coupon. I cannot stress this enough. Once you get into the swing of clipping, organizing, and buying with coupons, you'll never go back. I now hate to buy anything without a coupon--even the occasional night dining out. We go where we have a coupon! I'm about to jump into the Walgreens/CVS game to save even more money. We couldn't make it without couponing! If you're looking to get started, I wrote a post here, but there are also a lot of REALLY GREAT links on the right side bar towards the bottom.

7. Make Money on the Side. I'm really blessed that as a nurse I can find easy side jobs that are random and only take a few hours to complete. However, I've talked to girls who also babysit other children, repair computers, do web design, sell Avon/Mary Kay/Tupperware, freelance, work an occasional night/weekend shift if available in their fields, or work a mother's day out program once a week and take her kids with her. See if any of these options can work for you. Think out of the box.

8. Cook at Home. As I stated earlier, we spent an outrageous amount of money eating out before Drew was born and it was quite ridiculous. Eating at home is healthier, cheaper, and usually faster than driving across town and back with the food. We splurge every now and then, but it's few & far between compared to our old lifestyle. Meal plan at the beginning of every week so you'll know what meals you have when stomachs start growling around 5:00pm. If you have a list of what's available to cook, you'll be less likely to throw your hands in the air and head to Chick 'Fil A, our personal favorite. :)

9. Find fun on a Budget. We love our zoo membership! It was given to us as a gift, and it's our favorite way to get out of the house for a day for very little money. We also enjoy playing in the yard, walking around the neighborhood, going to the park, and visiting family. It's a change of scenery at least! We plan on eating dinner at the park when it gets warmer and heading to some swimming pools. Other people have suggested a membership to a children's museum when the child is old enough to engage in interactive or imaginary play. We'll be trying that out soon as well. While these memberships will cost 60-80 dollars upfront, if you use them often, they'll be worth it.

10. Don't Let the Stress Seep into the Marriage. I know this 500 times over from personal experience. If you constantly stress over (the lack of) money and allow it to corrupt your attitude, things go downhill from there! The best thing to do at this point is pray, read your Bible, and ask for others to pray with you. Listen for the Lord's answer and whatever you do--don't start taking it out on your spouse! Andrew and I can tell you this doesn't work! Share openly with one another about your overall feelings with your money situation and don't hide the tough situations from one another. I think it's especially hard on the male when money situations are tight because he wants to feel he's providing sufficiently for his family and wants the wife to feel like she's financially secure. And that's a good thing! But it's shouldn't keep him from sharing even the ugly parts of the financial situations. This has to be a team effort--or it won't work!

If any of you have any more practical advice on ways to cut back, I'd love to hear them! I hope this helps even just one of you out there...

Walgreens Free Pictures through Thursday

Use coupon code "20FREE4ME" at Walgreens.com through Thursday, 8/20 to get 20 free 4x6s. Pick them up at the store to avoid shipping charges!

Coupon Clipping Information

I've had so many people ask me for information on coupon clipping & saving money lately. There are hundreds of sites out there dedicated to this very thing, but I thought I would give you MY condensed version since some of the sites seem to overwhelm a person who is just starting. (Yeah, I walked that road of feeling overwhelmed!)

I cannot do this without a disclaimer. Please note: there are people out there who know how to work the Kroger/CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid/Target game to a "t!" They save hundreds and hundreds of dollars a month! I am not one of them. I mainly stick with 2 stores and find most of my deals on other websites. They take the work out for me. However, it does end up saving me ate least 80 dollars a month. Hey...that's 80 dollars I can do something else with! So with that said...

1. Start with one store. Walgreens and CVS really boggle my mind (even now), so I started with just Kroger. There are many other grocery stores who double or even triple coupons, so if Kroger isn't in your area, keep looking! If you're up for more of a challenge, you can give one of the drugstores a whirl! Target is super easy to start out with since they don't double coupons and the deals are straight forward.

2. Clip your paper coupons. Buy several copies of the paper or get your relatives or friends to save the coupons for you. These mainly come from: the Sunday paper, redplum (mailed out flyer), mailed out coupons from companies (as you sign up for their samples, coupons on their sites, they send you more coupons), and SmartSource (another mailed out flyer). You can also sign up on Kroger's website to receive their coupons which they mail to your home (Register-Sign in-My Account-My Profile). Using WalMart's sample page will also gain you coupons as the free samples roll in! Coupons.com will allow you to print coupons online!

3. Download your coupons to your card's account (ie your Kroger card). This is how you can end up getting free items. Places like Kroger allow you to use a paper coupon AND a downloaded coupon for the same item. Example: (from Southernsavers.com)

Pillsbury Grands! Biscuits, Crescents or Cinnamon Rolls 8-16.3 oz, .99¢ ea
-$1/2 Pillsbury Grands! Biscuits printable or printable (these links are inactive on my page, but this simply means you can print your coupons online!)
-$1/2 Grands! Biscuits
Shortcuts eCoupon (downloaded to card) (use with $1/2 coupon makes both FREE)

Sites to use for downloading coupons:
-Shortcuts.com
-Cellfire
-P&G esavers

You'll just need your Kroger card!

4. Know your store's rules. Kroger doubles coupons. I believe it's Fred's who triples coupons on Saturdays. I've read of Kroger stores in Nashville who triple coupons! Ask the cashier how many coupons you can use on one item. 1 paper one per item? 2? This is important! Also, if Kroger has a 2/$5 deal, that doesn't mean you are required to purchase two of that item to get them at 2.50 each. You can just buy one and get the deal!

5. Don't do all the hard work yourself! There are SO MANY women out there who post deals for so many different stores. They find all the deals, so all you have to do is drag out your coupons, download them to your card, and make out a grocery list! These are some of my favorites:

-SouthernSavers
(posts many grocery store's deals every week! My favorite!)
-Mommy Snacks (linked to 'A Beginner's Guide to Saving')
-Money Saving Mom
-Centsible Sawyer
-Faithful Provisions (thanks for the link, Marie!)

All of these ladies have different tutorials, money saving deals, and advice on their pages. It takes time to learn!

6. Organize your coupons. When I go into the store I have my coupons separated into 4 envelopes: food, personal care, home care, and medicinal. Within each envelope, I try to organize the coupons: dry products, refrigerated, freezer section, breakfast items, etc. It just makes it easier that specific coupn when I'm in the store. As I place the item in my cart, I remove the coupon from the envelope and place it in a stack inside my purse. Other people use a folder system, a box, etc. But this works for me!

I hope this has given some of you a little insight and might help you to save hard earned money for your families! If you're already doing this and have more tips, please feel free to share!

Free Schwann's Food!

Lori posted last week about the free Schwann's food to the first 500,000 customers. Well, they haven't reached their quota yet because it's still going on!

Just my 2 cents: their ice cream sandwiches are to die for!

You get:

-One item of $10 or less for free (can't combine two lesser items--it will only subtract the most expensive one)
-Free shipping if there's already a route in your area. If not, try your work zipcode.
-To pay tax in some states. Hey, 6 cents is not a bad deal for otherwise free food!

Go to the site here and enter your zipcode. After you select your meals, you'll go to check out and will need to register on their site. If you owe any money after the 10 dollar deduction, you can pay it when they deliver your food. (Gotta scrape up 6 cents...)

Thanks, Lori!

Swimming & Sewing

We tried forever to get a good shot of the 3 of us. In doing so, we held up the line at church!

I don't have a great picture of the back of Drew's outfit, but it's monogrammed with "Andrew," his actual first name; this was my Andrew's outfit when he was a baby! It was so surreal to see my baby in my husband's infant clothes. We're gonna wear this outfit out for the rest of the summer!

We went swimming Saturday. Drew didn't have quite as much fun as we expected. He wanted to be out of the pool, running around exploring. We stayed about an hour. Just long enough for me to get a light sunburn! Don't worry--Drew had on 3 layers of sunblock.

Onto the sewing part....

My sweet neighbor Daphne has lived next door for two and a half years. She and her hubs have 3 gorgeous kids; she owns/runs her own small business doing embroidery (Fuzzy Lemons). Good people. Met her for the first time Friday. I wish I were kidding! When I made mention on facebook last week that I wanted to learn how to do an applique, sweet Daphne stepped right up and offered for me to come over the next day!

She didn't know what a novice she had on her hands, but she found out quickly! Drew's long sleeved onesie turned out so cute, and if it weren't in the wash, I'd post a picture of it now. (Better than that--I'll try and take one of Drew wearing the onesie later!)

We cut a lowercase d out of fabric (just blew up one in a cute font in Word) and used wonder under to attach it to the shirt. Then Daphne let me on her sewing machine. Brave girl, that Daphne!

I learned so much between Daphne and my incredible mother in law this weekend. Seriously. Need. A. Sewing. Machine!

Daphne's student hard at work, messing up a zigzag stitch. ;)

Okay, so I can take NO credit for the bag. My mother in law did that. However, I did do a few of the burp cloths and the diaper wipes case (only hot glue and fabric required)! If I have a little girl down the road, she'll be getting some more similar to these!

Aspiration: Experienced Seamstress...or just using a needle without needing stitches

I really should have paid better attention in home economics back in junior high (yes, Missouri actually taught home ec to their 8th graders--it was fabulous!). It would have been MORE fabulous if I had realized I actually might need to sew a button on some pants one day. I am so needle-and-thread challenged, y'all. If I can finally get a needle threaded (took me at least 8 minutes tonight), I end up bleeding from 15 different pokes in just one finger. I need to wear 9 thimbles or invest in bandaids.

So sometimes this creative bone in me flares up, urging me to break out of my little comfort zone. (Using a needle & thread is breaking out of the zone for me.) So now I have this urge to applique some kind of onesie or shirt. The tutorial looks easy enough, but it does require a sewing machine or manual sewing. Definitely gonna forego the latter since it wouldn't even be wearable. I'm thinking maybe I'll get my mother in law to help me this weekend. She could sew anything!

Here's my list of things I'd like to "one day" make: (each project is linked)
1. Appliqued shirt
2. Apron
3. Modern Quilt (yeah, I'm a LONG way from here)
4. Felt food (for that future girl in my life!)
5. Pillowcase

So there you have it! Maybe by the time I'm knocking at death's door, I will have accomplished at least 4 of these....I'm not really holding out for the advanced quiltmaking. Eh, I can dream, right?

If I attempt the appliqued onesie this weekend, I WILL post my progress (ie, either brag til you're tired of hearing about it or put in my resignation for domestic goddess).

The One Where I Scored At Kroger

So I totally scored at Kroger last night. Here's the rundown:

So the guy was totally cute and checking me out, so I went and asked for his number....Completely kidding! My husband wasn't at the store! ;) Ha! No, I scored in a much better way than that! ;)

Here's the rundown:

4 Cover Girl nail polishes- 25 cents/each
2 Cover Girl trio eyeshadows- 1.25/each
1 Pantene shampoo- 1.99
1 Pantene conditioner- 2.99
1 Crest toothpaste- free
2 Listerine pocket packs- free
1 Herbal Essence shampoo- 0.99 cents
1 Herbal Essence mousse- free
2 Old Spice Deodorants- 1.00 each

Total: 15 name brand items for....$10.47!!! Oh and I didn't even add in the Cascade I got for $1.99! Steal!

I had to get lots of other groceries and stuff for the shower as well. Total saved last night: $85, with almost $40 of that in clipped coupons! I watched the total tick from $206 alllll the way down to....$138! Score!!!!

The only downfall was the fact that I had enough coupons to get 3 lbs. of split chicken breasts for FREE and they were out. Don't worry. I'll be back! (fade out) bwa ha ha ha!

My Journey to Becoming a SAHM

I want to preface this post by saying that I DO NOT believe it's wrong for a mom to work out of the home. It doesn't make her ANY less of a mom than those who stay home. Some moms CAN'T stay home. I understand that--I've been there! We all have to do what's best for our own families. So this post isn't about putting down working moms because they don't/can't/don't want to stay at home. This post is more about following your heart when God plants a seed there, whether it be staying at home with your child, teaching, managing, or becoming a missionary! This post is about going where God leads you and having faith that He will see you through, even when it doesn't make sense at times.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amy @ Finer Things published a post last week about stay at home moms. Even though many won't be able to relate to my story, I thought a few people just might. I was hesistant to post this on my blog at first, afraid it might offend some, but then I thought, "It just might give one woman comfort or hope or an added ounce of faith." So here goes...

"Mommy, come home!"

Though my tiny newborn couldn't utter these words to me as I headed back to work after a short 6 week maternity leave, I could feel it. He needed me. The Lord had grown him inside me for 9 full months and I'd been his provider of everything for the past month and a half. I nursed him, rocked him, comforted him when he hurt, and held him while he slept. He had given purpose to my life. And there I was, laying him into arms he barely knew to walk out the door for my night shift. "Gotta make ends meet."

Guilt. Sadness. Frustration. Anger. I felt them all. But how could I ever express these feelings of negativity to anyone when I was "only" working 1-2 12 hour night shifts a week. People thought I had a luxury by only working ONE day a week. I felt like I would be perceived as ungrateful and lazy for desiring to be a stay at home mom. A lot of my fellow nursing friends thought it was crazy that I'd spent 4 1/2 years in college and taken a large chunk of student loans, "just" to stay home. I wanted to pull out my hair; no one seemed to understand the way I felt! Was I crazy for wanting this?

I examined my motives. Why do I want to be a stay at home mom? Why do I feel guilty about my desire to raise my own child in our own home? Am I putting too much stress on my husband to earn that extra dollar? What do I think God wants for me? It's like Amy stated: "Staying home to raise my children is so much more than what I do. It’s who I am." I've felt that yearning and tugging at my heart to be a stay at home mom since I was a teenager. I just felt like it was what God wanted me to do. And then I remembered, "he knows the desires of my heart."

I explained my desires and frustrations to my husband, Andrew. He and I both wanted me to stay at home, but the funds just weren't there. The numbers didn't add up at the end of the month. I prayed fervently as I continued working. I went in for my night shift, exhausted, feeling as if I were a danger to my patients at times. My energy level was nearly zapped seeing as how I was still nursing every 2 hours at night and not getting a nap during the day. Oh, and let's not forget mommy brain. I couldn't remember what medication I was supposed to be giving, what patient just called for a urinal, or why I was standing in the kitchen break room looking for casting supplies. I wasn't doing anyone any good, and I feared I would end up actually harming someone! Something had to give.

We prayed. And prayed some more. And some more. We cut the extras: no more satellite, drastically reduced the take-out, started cutting coupons, only drove when we had to. Finally we thought we had a financial break. I counted down the weeks to hand in my resignation. I was preparing to head into work to announce to my boss my new job as a SAHM. To say I was excited would be a severe understatement. That's when my husband called and explained that the financial break we thought we were getting wasn't going to occur anytime soon. I was crushed. Was God not listening? Did he not want me to have the desires of my heart? Why the wait? Am I supposed to be learning something here? I held my baby and cried. That afternoon while he napped, I prayed. I literally cried to God, explaining my thoughts, questions, hurts. This will be strange to say to some, but, I felt him telling me to hand in my resignation anyway--even though there wasn't enough money in the bank. "What a crazy idea," I thought. "We can't pay the bills on nothing. God, I feel you telling me to stay at home, but I don't know for sure that's what you're saying. God, I need a physical sign!!! How will this possibly work?!"

A few minutes later the phone rang. It was one of my best friends calling to tell me that she and her husband were in a similar situation. I asked her what I should do, fully expecting her to tell me to just wait it out at work until the finances came through. "You know what?" she said. "God is gonna provide. I think you should resign and have faith that God will let your ends meet. He won't let you go without food and shelter! He says we're supposed to trust him in EVERYTHING, including finances." I cried tears of joy on the phone with her, explaining to her that she was my "sign."

I poured my heart out to my husband and told him my burden had been lifted. He was 100% okay with me resigning that night. So I did. I put my letter in my boss' box with no fear, guilt, or worry. I knew God would take care of us, even if the numbers didn't add up on paper right then.

It's been months since that day. And you know what? We haven't gone without paying the bills, without eating, or without a roof over our heads. And we're finding that the more we give to God and others in need (even if we may not have it to give), that he blesses us right back. Little things are always happening to give us extra income. My dependence on God has made my faith and my relationship with him so much stronger.

I know I am right where the Lord wants me. Being a SAHM is not for everyone, but I know it's for me. And if you feel a tugging in your heart that the Lord has placed within you to be a SAHM, don't fight it! Trust that the Lord will take care of you and your family. He is such a generous God and wants us to have the desires of our hearts--especially when our desire and His plan is to care for His children!

ArtsCow Rave

Lori listed a code for ArtsCow printing service several weeks ago. Since I'm always up for cheap photos of my little dude, I decided to try it out.

Here's what you need to know:

1. You do get 600 free 4x6's and 600 free 5x7's.

2. The free prints are divided out 100 4x6s/month, and (I think) 50 5x7s/month. In other words, you can't order all 600 or 1200 pictures at one time.

3. They CAN get you on the shipping if you don't research first. For example:

1-100 4x6s- shipping is 5.99.
101-150 4x6s- shipping is 7.49.

The point here being, either order 100 prints or order 150. Don't order 102 like I almost did and get charged an extra 1.50 for 2 pictures.

4. The other thing...shipping is extra if you order two different sizes of pictures. So be aware if you want the 4x6s AND the 5x7s, they'll charge more for shipping than just 5.99. Look @ the shipping charges page.

5. You can pay with paypal or a debit/credit card.

I tell you all this "beware" stuff to say that I did manage to get 100 4x6 prints for $5.99. This is cheaper than I could get them at Walgreens, and the best part is- I don't have to leave my home (dragging the baby, car seat, diaper bag, and all other large necessary baby items with me) to get them!

*Please excuse the terrible punctuation in this post. My thoughts are pretty much run-ons so I try to add a few commas and periods where I can squeeze them in.*

Drew Loves His Grandmothers!

We got a special treat this week in that Drew got to spend time with all three of his favorite grandmothers this week. If every child were loved as much as Drew, it would solve a LOT of problems in our world.

Grammy was on her way to the airport in Memphis and stopped to spend the night. She brought Drew this adorable toy which you can ride or push. Drew loved it!

Deda stopped by on Tuesday to visit with me & Drew and take us out to lunch! Getting out of the house is always fun! It's even better when other people wanna sit next to Drew in the restaurant and pick up the toys he drops...all 502 times.

Granna met us for lunch. That Granna is so funny!

Quest of the "Somewhat" Frugal Wife

Seeing as how my new lot in life is to be a somewhat frugal "mostly stay-at-home" mom, my biggest job after taking care of Drew will be managing our money better. One of the ways I'm attempting to do this is by playing the CVS/Walgreens game. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you basically use Walgreens and CVS coupons along with manufacturer coupons and savings rewards clubs to get almost free or completely free stuff. We're talking batteries, milk, toilet paper, toothpaste...you know, the things you actually NEED. The math adding up to the free stuff is WAY beyond my thinking capacity (I'd always prefer diagramming a sentence instead of performing long division), I just stalk other frugal moms' blogs and copy their ideas. ;)

Thanks to Lori (who needs a blog) for giving me websites to get me hooked on these deals! If you're a mom looking for free diapers (or would like to get them for a friend....like.....i don't know......ME?) check out this link! My goal is to try it out this week. I'll let you know if it works!

Also, at Target this week you can get a 2 POUND box of cereal (Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Honey Nut Cheerios, Fruity Pebbles, etc) for 4.99. You can find Cheerios coupons for 50-60 cents off just about everywhere so you can get a 2 lb box of cereal for 4.50. People--that's a deal these days! Plus they have $7 worth of coupons on the back of each box. This purchase literally made my day. Silly, I know.

Check out Baby Cheapskate for more deals and printable coupons!
