A Rarity

A RARE moment caught on camera. It's not so rare that he was sleeping, but that I actually risked waking him with a flash. Late nap meant he had to get up anyway!

Here's something not so rare: a wrecked room with a busy boy!

Happy 1 Year, Drew!

Dear Baby Boy,

It's here. Some days dragged. Some weeks dragged. But my, how this year has flown! This time one year ago, we had no idea what lay in store for us. I was so excited, so ready to experience this uncharted territory of my life. I vividly remember lying on that operating table with Daddy at my head, waiting to hear it-the most beautiful sound to a mother's ears. Oh it was beautiful. That sweet, sweet cry. You were finally REAL. Touchable. Audible. I was straining to see your face. I had imagined it for 9 long months. You were absolutely perfect. One year ago we saw God through you. Such innocence. Such perfection.

One year ago today. I can still remember the back pain!

SO ready to meet you!

This probably grosses 99% of you out, but I love it!

Finally a family of three!

My, what uncharted territory we had to face! But, oh, it has all been worth it. Your life makes my purpose clear. The world seems to be running short on God fearing men; I guess I'm a small part of that solution! You are the brightest part of our day, and the reason we make the decisions we do. You make us less selfish people. You make us look at your environment and constantly question if it is beneficial to you. I worry sometimes at all the garbage that comes our way--through television, radio, or even in the grocery store! I want to protect your little mind and keep it pure. I want you to keep your innocence for as long as possible.

You, my sweet Drew, are my greatest blessing. You are growing up far too quickly. Please, please stay little for a while longer. Your smiles and laugh are worth far more than gold! Your hugs, your kisses, the way you lay your head on our shoulders, the way you lay limp in our arms when you fall asleep. The way you squint your nose and smile. You are nothing but pure joy in our lives.

To simply say "we love you" seems oh-so inadequate. It's more than that. So much more. The English language doesn't encompass that feeling we have for you. I guess you will understand one day when you hold you own little one. But for now, stay little for me. Keep me on my toes. Allow me to tear up as I look at you when you sleep at night, not being able to believe how I feel about someone I've known only a year. Keep making my heart flip when you look at me and grin across the room. Just for a while longer....stay little.

-------------------------------------------------------------
At 12 months:

You like: eating, trying new foods, orange juice, water, playing outside, "mowing" the grass, wrestling with Daddy, pulling things around the house (garbage cans, laundry baskets, your horse), climbing on Mommy's back, being chased, balloons, seeing family members, bathtime, bouncing, dancing, running, chewing Daddy's belt, balls, putting things together, taking things apart, figuring out new toys and how they work

(Pulling the horse around)

You dislike: (See, I was gonna write "naps," but he's gotten so much better that, for the first time, I'm not gonna write it. Let's hope it doesn't come back to haunt me!) Confinement: at diaper changes, in carseats, or in store carts. This child likes to be on the GO!

Accomplishments:

Your mouth: 8 teeth now! You love to eat just about anything! You've gotten so good at chewing. You're taking a sippy cup without problems, love to drink out of a regular cup, and can use a straw really well! You learned how to blow a whistle on 7/5/09. I'm getting ready to regain my body! That's right, we're going to start gradually weaning soon. It's so bittersweet. :(

You can say: e-i-e-i, ahhhh (when you drink), mmmm (when you eat), ah oh, mama, dada, daddy (first time on 7/6), roar (when asked what the lion says), and you sniff with your nose (when asked what your nose does or if you're stinky). You also speak in Drewese. I would love to know what you're saying as you babble on continuously!
Your nose: When we say, "What does your nose do?" you squinch your nose and breathe in and out quickly. You love doing that!

"Doing the sniffy nose. Love. It."
Your hands: You can wave bye bye, give five, blow a kiss (with the back of your hand) and clap. Your fine motor skills are progressing. Your pincer grasp is excellent and you love to feed yourself from your high chair.

Your ears: You know what "no no" means, but you don't always choose to obey. ;) You love listening to music and dancing/bouncing along. You have a LONG list of favorite songs! Any song with your name in it is always a shoe-in!

Sleep: My, how far we've come in this area! You go down for the night around 8:00 and sleep until 7:30-8:00am. You take 1-2 naps a day. Sometimes you sleep 45 minutes, sometimes 2 hours! I think you're trying to phase out your morning nap, much to my dismay!

What a long way from one year ago. Your list of accomplishements was: eat, pee, poop, and sleep...all frequently!

Happy Birthday, Angel! I pray you have many more healthy, happy years ahead of you! We love you deeper than the ocean!

Mommy & Daddy

P.S. I'm working on his one year video slideshow. It'll probably be around 10 minutes long, so that means: 1) It'll be for the avid Drew lover (aka probably family) and 2) it'll take FOREVER AND A YEAR to upload.

Sleeping Issues

Do you remember all the sleep issues we had for the first...I don't know....9 months of Drew's life?
  • Peeing through the diaper only at naptime/bedtime
  • Waking up after 30 min of nap
  • Waking up after 40 min of nap
  • Waking in the middle of the night
  • Wanting only to be held while he slept
Well, for those of you with a child such as mine, know this: THERE IS HOPE! This week has been a little crazy at our house napwise, but Drew pretty much takes an hour and a half nap once or twice a day. I think he's trying to cut out that morning nap, but I'm fighting him for it! I'm just not ready for afternoon showers...or midnight showers. My next day hair looks like a grease ball if I shower before bed. It was suggested to me by a few that that's what ponytails are for! Touche!

So how did we finally get to the nap instead of the catnap? It just happened on its own--no tears, no fighting! One morning he just slept past the 30 min mark, past the 40 min mark, and when he got to the hour mark I was worried sick; I had to go in and make sure he was still breathing! Since that day his naps are so much better!

I don't think Drew will ever be one of those lucky children who falls asleep over their toyboxes or in their highchairs, but I'm happy with a long nap!

So to those in the "bad sleeping child" situation, hang in there! One day it will just magically get better!

Sweet Moments

My love for these two boys is incomparable!

A Momentous Day!

6 long months....and last night my baby FINALLY slept through the night! I kept expecting him to cry around 12 to be fed, but not a peep was heard! When I woke up at 5:30, I was shocked and a little worried. I didn't jump out of the bed and run to his room because I've played that card before in the past. One night I actually woke him up because I placed my hand on him so quickly to make sure he was breathing! I heard him making noise and went in the room to check to make sure we didn't have a case of a leaky diaper, a too often occurring incidence in our house. Sound asleep, making baby dreaming noises. My heart leaped out of my chest! Finally, he woke up around 7:15 (per, Andrew) and played in his crib until I went to get him at 7:45. It's amazing what a full night's sleep can do for you!

And now? He fussed in his crib about 2 minutes before he fell completely asleep for his morning nap. I would take a picture for you, but I would risk waking him up. Ain't happenin'. ;)

Hope your day is as awesome as mine as been. My prayers have been answered!

A Beautiful Sight

For any parent out there whose child is a poor sleeper and dislikes his/her crib, a sight such as this will bring you to tears. At least it did me!

We are well on our way to better sleep--for everyone!

Psalm 6:9

Psalm 6:9- The Lord has given ear to my request; the Lord has let my prayer come before him.

My child slept last night--7 hours straight! Hallelujah! Thanks to Stacy who suggested we try the "eat, play, sleep" method one more time. It worked on day 2! He & I fell asleep on the couch at 8pm, he woke up at 3am when I moved to the bed, ate, went back to sleep, and ate once more before getting up at 8am. That, my friends, is progress!

Another milestone: he rolled over twice yesterday from his tummy to his back. He's growing up too quickly!

Advice Please! Cry It Out?

Since Drew was born we've been sharing a family bed. We did this for several reasons, and I don't regret it at all. It gave us all more and better sleep during those early weeks. However, now that he's staying asleep in bed (not all night, by any means!) but still being noisy and fidgety, I feel it's time for him to transition at least to his bassinet. Maybe at 3 or 4 months we'll move him to his crib across the house. I just feel that since he's not eating every 2 hours anymore at night that it's time for Mommy and Daddy to get some better sleep!

I don't know what I want to hear. That you've done it? That your child still loves you? How long it took for him/her to fall asleep on his/her own? Should I put him in his new bed and let him learn to CIO at the same time or do them separately? I've read several articles that suggest that co-sleeping babies don't sleep through the night as quickly as non co-sleeping babies. Reason being? If you had a piece of chocolate cake lying next to you all night, would you take a nibble even if you weren't hungry? That's their theory at least! I thought if I put his bassinet right next to our bed and maybe just put my hand in with him until he fell asleep (since he's used to lying right next to my entire body) that it might ease the transition. Heavens. I don't know!

Right now I'm trying to start putting him in his bassinet for naps and praying he doesn't pee everywhere, waking himself up. He's been asleep for almost an hour, but I hear him stirring around now!

Any advice for a new mom? I think if I let him cry it out, I'll cry with him!

P.S. I have several people who email me answers or tell me their opinions in real life b/c they don't know how to post a comment. Hitting the Major Milestone- Sleep!

At 1 month, 1 week, and 4 days Drew slept 5 straight hours! Hallelujah! I awoke as a new woman- refreshed and revived! That was all after I nearly had a heart attack when I woke up at 3:40, realizing he ate last at 10:30, and I hadn't heard from him since. I sat straight up in the bed and put my hand directly on his back to feel him breathing. Sigh relief. He was fine! Unfortunately, my quick movements in the bed woke him, and he was ready to eat! Fine by me!

Last night he slept 4 hours straight which is still a welcome relief! We'll see how tonight goes.

My sweet boy will be SIX weeks old tomorrow. I cannot believe it! As of now...

-He loves to make sweet noises while playing on his activity mat. I love hearing his little coos!
-He looooves bathtime. This kid will be like his dad and love the water.
-He enjoys rides in the car-most of the time. Not applicable when he's hungry.
-He loves being lifted up and down, up and down. Our arms aren't loving it so much.
-I have the only kid in the world who loves diaper changes. He just smiles so big when I put that cold wipe on his little tush. And, yes, he loves to have his butt paste put on!
-Being naked is his joy in life. So many times when he's been fussy, I've taken off his clothes and he became completely content!
-Peeing on his daddy is in next to greatest joy in life. Especially on his daddy's favorite blue shirt. ;)

-He's not so much liking being in a front carrier. I'm hoping once he develops some head control he'll enjoy his hotsling more in different positions.
-He hates to sit in one position for a long time, unless it's nursing. This kid is a monkey!
-My little booger will fight sleep until he's sooo cranky! We're in for a long road!

Learning His Ways

Hallelujah! A gift from God arrived last night in the form of sleep. This sounds awful coming from a nurse's mouth, but forget research! Drew sleeping right next to me is the best form of sleep for ALL of us. All I have to do is roll over to feed him, and Andrew takes care of the dirty diapers. He sleeps right on top of my chest where he's most comfortable. Since we have little rousing between feedings (no up and down to the rocking chair, lights turning off and on, etc) he goes right back to sleep after he eats...and Mommy does too! I'm not sure how much Daddy likes getting up and changing those diapers though. ;)

On the downside, my little man has an adult sized bladder. This hasn't been proven yet, but I've got evidence towards the matter. SO many times now I've noticed that Drew had a wet diaper and went to change it. It wasn't SOAKED, but it was definitely wet. I lay him in his bassinet for his nap and 10-15 minutes later he's fussing. I walk over. The entire bassinet is covered in pee. I would blame Huggies for their diapers not being absorbent enough, but for this much pee, my little guy should probably be in an adult sized Depends. I'm talking it's in his hair, his outfit, his blanket, and his feet. He's soaked. This happens daily. Even nightly, like last night--when he was LYING ON ME. Fun times! Since I'm pretty straight forward, I'll tell you I just threw the shirt in the floor, had Andrew change Drew, and continued sleeping. Sleep > cleanliness right now.

Drew had to go in for a pediatrician visit yesterday since he had urinating problems on our discharge date. They wanted to make sure he was peeing okay, not jaundiced, and was gaining weight. He's gained 9 ounces in 5 days! Yay, little dude! So he's 8 lbs. 8 oz. as of yesterday. We don't have to go back for a month, but I believe we'll be switching peds. I wasn't at all crazy about the one we went to. I have a real problem when any healthcare worker walks into a room and starts doing stuff to a patient without explaining to the patient or their parent what in the world they're doing or assessing. This is especially true when my baby is screaming bloody murder because it hurts! Oh and it didn't make a good impression on me when I looked down and saw that the chairs in the waiting room were TAPED together at the legs with scotch tape so they wouldn't move. I don't know why that bothered me so much, but it did. Oh and the well child and sick child waiting areas were separated with, you guessed it, a line of taped chairs. That'll show those germs!

Daddy & Drew at the pedi office

In his favorite sleeping place

A very proud Granna. We have to set time limits on how long she can hold Drew before the next person gets him. ;)

His sleeping position as I type this. His arms HAVE to be out of the covers. He hates being swaddled!

On a totally different note, in the 45 minutes that we were gone to the pedi's office yesterday, someone totally demolished our mailbox that had 10 balloons on it. Clearly, the driver wasn't paying attention. The worst part: he left no name or number. May he have diarrhea for a month!

Off to kiss someone's sweet face...

We're Home as a Family of Three

First of all, thank you all for your comments, calls, and prayers. We have such wonderful family and friends and are so blessed!

Drew is sleeping now in his bassinet for the first time. Prior to this afternoon, he's refused to sleep anywhere except our arms. I'm not complaining though. ;) He is by far our greatest blessing and we are SO happy to be home with a healthy baby boy. We had a really rough day on Saturday, our discharge date. Little Drew hadn't peed in 34 hours and was in the early stages of dehydration. No matter how much breast milk and formula he got, he still wouldn't pee! It was absolutely the hardest day of my life knowing something could be wrong with my baby. I finally decided to go along with the doctor and just cath him so we could see if he had urine or not. What an agonizing decision! As our nurse was about to rub him down with betadine to perform the cath, he peed!! She caught half an ounce in a cup as it shot across the room. He's been home free ever since. No mommy has ever been prouder of her son's tee-tee, I tell you!

Short and sweet:

He's eating really well now, and we have to wake him up to eat because he LOVES to sleep, and he's smiling constantly! We loooove his sweet smiles! Birth story to come later. Now to answer the question I'm constantly getting: "Where are more pictures??!!" They're right here...

Right before getting started: 38 weeks, 5 days

I'm so ready!

Surgery had started...

Here he comes!

Happy Birthday, baby boy! His cry left me crying!

Making the sweetest noise ever to Mommy's ears.
